Sankri Village Travel Guide: It’s More Than Just a Base Camp

Sankri Village: The Last Outpost of the Tons Valley

For 90% of travelers, Sankri is just a place to sleep before starting the Kedarkantha or Har Ki Dun trek. But this village deserves a day of its own.

Beyond the Trek: What to Do?

  • Someshwar Mahadev Temple: Visit the ancient wooden temple in the village center. The intricate carving is a masterpiece of the Yamuna valley style. Note: Outsiders are often not allowed inside the sanctum, admire it from the courtyard.
  • Try Red Rice: Ask your homestay for “Laal Chaawal” (local red rice). It’s a staple here, nutty and nutritious.
  • The “Market” Vibe: Visit the small line of shops selling trekking gear. It’s a great place to rent a jacket or gloves much cheaper than in Dehradun.

Network Update (2025)

  • Jio: Works decently (4G) in the main market area.
  • Airtel: Spotty but available.
  • BSNL: The most reliable backup.
  • Warning: Once you leave Sankri for Juda Ka Talab, there is zero network. Make your calls here.
