Sonprayag to Triyuginarayan Ancient Trail: Day Trek Guide (2026)

Most pilgrims and wedding guests reaching the sacred Triyuginarayan Temple opt for the 12-kilometer shared jeep ride from Sonprayag. But during the peak Char Dham season in May and June, that narrow mountain road can become a frustrating bottleneck of traffic jams.

The alternative? Walking the ancient pilgrim trails that weave directly up the mountain through dense pine and oak forests.

If you are reasonably fit, trekking to Triyuginarayan is not just a way to beat the traffic—it is a serene, spiritual walk offering stunning panoramic views of the Mandakini Valley. Here is your complete local guide to the hiking routes.

The Two Trekking Routes: Distances Clarified

There is a lot of confusing information online about the distance. To be clear, the motorable road is 12 km. If you decide to walk, you have two much shorter pedestrian options:

Route 1: The Sonprayag Steep Shortcut (5 km)

  • Starting Point: The main bridge at Sonprayag (where the Kedarnath yatra also begins, but diverging uphill instead of following the river).
  • Distance: Approximately 5 km.
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Steep.
  • Time Required: 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
  • The Vibe: This is the most direct path. It cuts vertically across the switchbacks of the motorable road. Because it gains nearly 450 meters (1,500 feet) in elevation quickly, it will get your heart pumping.

Route 2: The Sitapur Trail (7 km)

  • Starting Point: Sitapur Village (2 km before Sonprayag).
  • Distance: 7 km.
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
  • Time Required: 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • The Vibe: If you parked your car at the Sitapur overflow parking (as mentioned in our Sonprayag Parking Guide), you do not need to walk to Sonprayag first. There is a beautifully paved, ancient 7 km stone path starting right from Sitapur. It is a more gradual climb than the Sonprayag shortcut and passes through idyllic terraced farms and tiny hamlets.

What to Expect on the Trail

Unlike the heavily commercialized 16-kilometer Kedarnath trek—which is packed with mules, palanquins, and thousands of pilgrims—the Triyuginarayan trail is incredibly quiet.

  • The Scenery: You will walk under a thick canopy of rhododendron, oak, and pine. As you climb higher, the tree line occasionally breaks to reveal sweeping views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks and the deep Mandakini river gorge below.
  • The Trail Condition: It is a mix of natural dirt paths, tree roots, and ancient stone steps laid down decades ago for pilgrims.
  • Shops & Water: Unlike the Kedarnath route, there are very few dhabas or water points on this short 5 km stretch. You must carry your own water bottle and snacks from Sonprayag.

Practical Tips for Trekking Guests

  1. What to do with luggage? If you are attending a wedding at Triyuginarayan and want to trek up, do not carry your heavy bags. Send your main luggage up in a shared Max/Bolero jeep with other family members, and only carry a small daypack with water and a light jacket.
  2. Footwear: You do not need heavy-duty trekking boots, but a good pair of sports shoes with deep grips is essential. The stone steps can be slippery.
  3. Monsoon Warning (July–August): If you are hiking during the rainy season, the damp oak forests become a breeding ground for leeches. Wear full-length trekking pants, tuck them into your socks, and carry a small pouch of salt to detach any leeches.
  4. Weather Changes: The temple sits at almost 2,000 meters. Even if it is sweating hot in Sonprayag, the temperature drops noticeably as you enter Triyuginarayan village. Keep a windcheater handy.

Walking up to the sacred Akhand Dhuni (eternal flame) where Lord Shiva and Parvati married makes the final darshan feel incredibly earned.
